7th edition of the CIES Football Observatory Annual Review: "Fewer Brazilians in top European leagues"

The CIES Football Observatory academic team kindly reminds you that the seventh edition of the big-5 league Annual Review is now available. This key reference publication unveils the logics of success in the five major European leagues.

The five chapters that make up the publication cover the following areas: player selection and turnover; age structure and club experience; mobility and contracts; club pitch performance; player pitch performance.

The 2012 report notably highlights that Brazil remains the most represented origin among expatriates (123 players). However, the number of Brazilians is on the decrease (-31 players compared to 2008/09), while that of Argentineans (114 players) and French (101 players) is stable. “Global” clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester City won their league with players imported from seven different countries.

More information is to be found here. An excerpt of the Annual Review may be downloaded for free from the CIES Football Observatory's website. The 96-page comprehensive report is on sale on the CIES website. For all enquiry, please write to [email protected] or call the CIES administration at 0041 32 718 39 00.

Portrait of Renata Roth, FMA President

I have not always known that I wanted to work in Sport. My first major was International Relations but meanwhile I was competing in martial arts and really loved it. At one point I decided I wanted to become an executive working in sports, but that is not very common in Brazil, especially in the year 2000 when there was still no talk of the Olympic Games and the World Cup happening there.

So my second major was in sports and my first endeavor in this industry was to be a volunteer at the Olympic Games in Athens. From that point on, I knew I was on the right path. I was very lucky that my first formal sports job was with Fabio Laudisio, an alumnus from the first edition. We spent almost 3 years working together on a Pan-American Games sponsorship project and after that he really was the one who encouraged me to apply to the FIFA Master.

When the Pan-Am Games were over I flew to Leicester to start the course that represented my jump into the European Market. I was part of the 8th edition, until now the edition with the most women accepted!

After I graduated I spent 3 years in London working for Soccerex. Ideally, my passion has directed me towards the Olympic Games but football always appeared in my life so ever since I graduated I have always worked with it, being World Cup related projects or lately with clubs. Once I concluded the project I was hired to do in London I moved to Switzerland to work in the newly created Operations division of UEFA.

Apart from my nine-to-five job, I am also the current president of the FIFA Master Alumni Association. I do it with all my heart and I really hope your FMA grows bigger and stronger every year. The whole board works in a volunteer basis so all we have achieved is really from the effort and commitment of all of us who take an interest in the association and make extra time to contribute. To all of you my warmest thank you.
