Doing "small society" by leisure activity: An ethnography of community life in proximity sports clubs.

As part of a research grant from the Swiss National Fund Division1 Research, The University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland, School of Social Work & Health Sciences | UAS EESP | Lausanne (Professor Dominique Malatesta) and the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) / University of Neuchâtel (Professor Christophe Jaccoud) will lead a three year research project entitled, “Doing ‘small societies’ by leisure activity: An ethnography of community life in proximity sports clubs.

Opening of the the on-line application process for the FIFA Master 16th edition

On-line application for the FIFA Master 16th edition

 

CIES has officially opened the application process for the 16th edition (2015-2016) of the FIFA Master on Monday 22nd September 2014.

With over 90% of 380+ FIFA Master graduates working in the sports industry, the impact of the FIFA Master reaches across all continents and nations. Alumni work in organisations as diverse as, but not limited to, the IOC, UEFA, FIFA, Juventus FC, adidas, Asian Football Confederation (AFC), International Basketball Federation (FIBA), Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), Major League Soccer (MLS), NBA and the Sauber Formula 1 team.

New “ranking by minute” statistics: there is hope for Manchester United

The CIES Football Observatory is pleased to present innovative statistics on the average number of points achieved by clubs and footballers by minute played.

This brand new indicator is calculated on the basis of the score in matches at the end of every minute of the game. Only footballers who have played at least 50% of championship minutes are included in this analysis.

Memorable Wimbledon Visit for FIFA Master 15th Edition Class

15th edition of the FIFA Master at Wimbledon

 

The world famous All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Wimbledon, was the venue for the first field visit by the 15th edition of the FIFA Master class.

During a busy programme for the day, the 32 international postgraduates had the opportunity to tour the All England Club grounds, learn about the history and evolution of the Wimbledon Championships and also view the iconic No. 1 and Centre Courts. In addition, the day was made particularly memorable thanks to the sight of Great Britain’s Andy Murray practicing on the outside courts.

Abu Dhabi: launch of the first FIFA/CIES Programme

Abu Dhabi: opening ceremony

 

The first edition of the FIFA/CIES Programme in sport management started on 28 September on the campus of Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (PSUAD), the academic partner of the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) in the United Arab Emirates. Twenty-four students attended the first classes which will continue until June 2015. The Programme benefits from the support of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC).

PSUAD Vice-Chancellor Eric Fouache, Deputy Vice-Chancellors Fatima Al Shamsi and François-Xavier Romanacce as well as ADSC General Secretary H.E. Aref Al Awani were present for the opening ceremony.

“This partnership with CIES is very important to us. It will make it possible to train sports managers taking both national needs and international realities into account. As we are now part of a 16-University network, this partnership also corresponds to our mission of building bridges between civilisations”, rejoiced Eric Fouache.

How did you first get involved with the FIFA Master?

Strangely for a historian, I’m not very good at my own history. I can’t really remember exactly how and when I got involved in the FIFA Master but as several students from the first edition recently reminded me: I was there – they remembered! The DMU (De Montfort University in Leicester (England), one of the three partner universities teaching a module of the FIFA Master) module was really begun by Pierre Lanfranchi, whom I’d known from his time at the European University in Florence.
