Who will win the World Cup?

Issue number 225 of the CIES Football Observatory Weekly Post reveals the most likely World Cup winners according to an exclusive power index. This index combines the average percentage of matches played at domestic league level since July 2017 by the 23 most fielded players per team in the qualifying campaign with the average sporting level of employer clubs. Spain tops the list ahead of Brazil.

The three winners of the FIFA/CIES 2018 University Network Prize, Abdulrazzaq Al-Mahmood, Atanas Tarkalanov and Damir Valeev, have just completed their trip to Switzerland. The visit, which was part of their prize, provided an opportunity for the alumni from the 2017 FIFA/CIES Executive Programme organised by Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD) to discover various facets of the country, visit the CIES headquarters in Neuchâtel and also the "Home of FIFA" in Zurich.

Report on the recent Conference: “2018: A pivotal year for Russia?”

The conference “2018: A pivotal year for Russia?” organized by the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) in collaboration with the Geographical Society of Neuchâtel (Société Neuchâteloise de Géographie - SNG) on Thursday, the 3rd of May 2018, was a highly successful event. The guests were particularly delighted and listened carefully to the passionate lecturer, Professor Eric Hoesli.

The IOC's Olympic Games Associate Director, Pierre Ducrey, returns to class at the University of Neuchâtel

Professor Denis Oswald, who is Director of the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) and an International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board Member, was joined by FIFA Master 3rd Edition alumni Pierre Ducrey for guest lectures at the University of Neuchâtel. These special sessions were part of the Events and Liabilities sub-module within the final Sports Law Module of the FIFA Master course.

Sports law studies underway for 18th Edition FIFA Master Class

During the first month of our sports law module studies here at the University of Neuchâtel, we have been able to better understand the importance of law in the day to day operations of the international world of sport.  These lectures have come with many booklets of regulations and laws for the class to analyse. However, we have been fortunate to study with a wide number of expert professors and guest speakers who have made all the articles much more understandable and easier for us to follow.

Best players of the big-5 league season

Issue number 227 of the CIES Football Observatory Weekly Post ranks footballers having played at least 1,800 big-5 league minutes over the season (1,440 for Germany) according to their performance level. Lionel Messi heads the table ahead of David Silva and Paulo Dybala. Six Manchester City players are in the top 10 list.
