CIES Football Observatory big-5 European leagues prediction (season 2013-2014)

Big-5 European leagues prediction (season 2013-2014)

For the fourth time, the CIES Football Observatory presents its predictions for the big-5 European leagues. According to our research conclusions the teams with the greatest chance of success this year are Manchester United in England, Real Madrid in Spain, Borussia Dortmund in Germany, Juventus in Italy and Paris St-Germain in France.

Our predictions are based on the analysis of player profile data from the perspective of "experience" (number of matches played and results achieved), "prolificacy" (number of goals scored and level of the competition) and "stability" (number of seasons with the employer club and years remaining on contract).

New record in Big-5 league transfer expenditure

According to the CIES Football Observatory analysis, big-5 league clubs spent over two billion euro for the permanent transfer of first team squad members during the last transfer window. This is the highest figure since 2008 and most probably also in the history of football.

With 719 million euro invested for the permanent transfert of new players, English teams were the most active. It is the highest level ever recorded. A new record high was also measured in France (383 million euro) and Germany (259 million).

Interview of Professor Christophe Jaccoud, sport sociologist at CIES

Professor Christophe Jaccoud, sport sociologist at CIES

Can you first tell us about yourself and your career path?

I am from Lausanne and it is in this city that I studied sociology and literature in the 80’s. I already had a connection with Neuchâtel, since I studied ethnology there during one year. My interests, during my studies, were mainly focused on philosophy and literature. However, these subjects were not very developed at this time and I felt the need to study and learn more. That is how I ended up specialising myself in sociology. I would add about this reorientation that I may belong to the last generation which the choice of social sciences correspond with a certain part of critical commitment.
