Huge success for the first edition of the CONMEBOL/FIFA/CIES programa ejecutivo de Fútbol

CIES is delighted for its cooperation with FIFA and CONMEBOL for having successfully concluded the Programa Ejecutivo de Fútbol for FIFA’ South American member associations last Saturday at the CONMEBOL headquarters in Asunción, Paraguay. The programme ended with the 7th and last module addressing both the management aspects of a national football team and for a football event. Then, the programme conclusion was celebrated with a graduation ceremony where all the participants who successfully completed the course received their diplomas.

« Égalité femmes-hommes dans le sport : peut-on l’atteindre ? ».

MVPs of the semester: big-5 league teams

The CIES Football Observatory has developed a property algorithm to assess the performance of footballers from the exclusive data produced by the leading sports company OptaPro. Issue number 278 of the Weekly Post presents the MVP per big-5 league club, as well as the top values for each of the six areas of the game analysed. Only players fielded for at least nine (MVPs) and respectively six (per domain) full domestic league matches are included.

The MVPs are footballers whose performance had the biggest influence in their teams’ results. We notably find Marco Verratti at Paris St-Germain, Lionel Messi at Barcelona, Toni Kroos at Real Madrid, Kevin de Bruyne at Manchester City, Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool, Ciro Immobile at Lazio, Jamie Vardy at Leicester City, Dimitri Payet at Olympique Marseille, Miralem Pjani? at Juventus, Sven Bender at Bayer Leverkusen and Milan Škriniar at Inter.

Going Global - Around the Sporting World

Sport is a universal language, building more bridges between people than anything else I can think of” -   Sebastian Coe

For the FIFA Master 20th Edition, November was themed around the internationalisation of sport, with the words of double Olympic gold medalist and IAAF President Seb Coe suitably summarising our last month, both inside and outside of the classroom. Moving from the history books to the modern day, we worked through the core challenges affecting sport as it continues to globalise, exploring how it both unites and divides people around the world.

Expert lectures from academics and authors took us around the planet and brought these issues to life, with James Esson’s stories of aspiring Ghanaian footballers and Richard Mills’ historical tour of the former Yugoslavia both particular highlights. It was fascinating to review the huge importance that football plays in debates around wars, borders and human rights, making us all even more aware of how significant sport can be away from the field of play.
